It’s 12:30pm on Thursday at Kukui Grove Center Stage. The area is jammed with strollers and wandering toddlers as the anticipation mounts for the Showtime Character Toddler Thursday show. Luckily the Showtime Character staff is prompt. The show starts on time and no meltdowns ensue, a good sign of a toddler friendly event.
Presently, two Showtime Characters peak around the corner of the corridor and walk into the audience to shake hands with the kids. A single child begins to cry. While most children love these cuddly creatures, a few are initially startled. The crying fades as the music starts.
The Characters lead the children through a group of interactive songs and dances like: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and The Hokey Pokey. The toddlers and preschoolers bobbed, bounced and danced, captivated by the pair of cuddly dancers on the stage. My son kept peering around the corner to see if any more characters might appear from the secret corridor.
The show was short, but perfect for the average toddler attention span. When the show was over, the children were allowed to line up by the stage. One by one they were called up to get their picture taken with the Showtime Characters.
As an added bonus, a number of crafts were available for the children to participate in. My son mad a leaf print and a hat, while the others made magic wands, puppets and bracelets. The craft station attendant was especially peppy and helpful.
The Showtime Characters perform every first and third Thursday of the month at Kukui Grove Center Stage. January 5th, 2012 they will perform at 11:30am and on January 19th, the show is scheduled to begin at 12:30pm.
